Hiking The Kuliouou Ridge Trail
Last weekend Chad and I hiked the Kuliouou Ridge Trail with a couple of our friends so of course I wanted to share a little bit of our experience and what you can expect from this hike with you all!

Before You Hike
So the Kuliouou Ridge Trail is located in Hawaii Kai before Koko Head. The trailhead starts at the end of a cul-de-sac so you will be parking in a neighborhood. Be mindful and respectful of where you park, some cars had tickets when we were there.
About The Hike
The Kuliouou Ridge trail is a 4.4 mile hike with an elevation of 2,019ft. It is around 2.2 miles to the summit of the hike and 2.2 miles back.
This trail is clearly defined, which I thought was nice. There are two different trails you can take when starting off, but make sure you follow the sign for the Kuliouou Ridge Trail, not the Kuliouou Valley Trail. See below:
I wouldn’t recommend really young kids on this hike as there was a father hiking it with his maybe 4 year old daughter and they unfortunately never made it to the top.
Once you start hiking up the man-made stairs, you will be on the final stretch to the very peak of the hike. This part is dreadful. Like Koko Head dreadful but maybe even worse . . .
It took me a hot minute to get through this part because my legs were shaking I was in so much pain.
All in all this is definitely an awesome hike and an especially good workout! I think this took us around 3.5-4 hours to complete.
Below are pictures I took during the hike:
I recommend going on a clear day otherwise you’ll be in a cloud when you get all the way to the top!
- LOTS of water – more than 24oz
- Wear hiking shoes or sneakers
- Sunblock/bug spray
